Corrupt (Devil’s Night Book 1) by Penelope Douglas <— BULLY ROMANCE ALERT & THIS IS A BLAST FROM OUR BOOK PAST (this book was HUGE amongst our book crew)!! And, to bring it back to the forefront (in case all of our new fellow readers haven’t read it yet), I found another AMAZING recommendation and book review by Cristina that I had yet to feature and I am thrilled to have found it now.
I usually call them “mini book reviews” since they often come in as comments or quick emails (and this review below is a combo of both – Cristina left a comment on the blog AND emailed me because she had so much to say about it), but this one? This is a true big-ass review because she talks about the book, but mostly about her own personal experience reading this book.
I LOVE when I get that kind of introspection from a recommendation. I want to know the WHY of why it moved it you.
She says:
Finished Corrupt and absolutely LOVED it! It had me on the edge of my seat the WHOLE time!! Could not put it down! Went to work the next day on four hours of sleep (oops!) But sometimes sacrifices must be made. 😉 Penelope Douglas rocked it!! This is EXACTLY they type of book I was looking for and she nailed it!
I’m kinda hoping for a book about Kai… I’d LOVE to get to know him some more. 😉 Like others have asked… What in the world do I read next?! That’s one of the toughest questions in book world, ESPECIALLY after an emotional and exciting book like that! 🙂
I was going to post a comment on your blog about this book, but then I realized I had a lot more to say. (lol)
What I love so much about your blog is that it’s a place I can come to and share in my passion for reading contemporary romance, paranormal, etc. I do not have any close friends who are passionate about reading as me. I read about 4-5 books/week. 🙂
Moving on to this book… WOW is all that I could say once I was finished. I usually choose books according to my mood, and once I pick a particular type (student/teacher; paranormal; college romance; etc.) I usually get on a kick where I read 2-3 books just like it until the formula becomes to predictable and then I get bored. I really wish I wasn’t built this way, because I could easily come across an awesome student/teacher (example) book and it may not knock my socks off because I’ve had enough of that type.
This is where I was at before Corrupt.
What I loved most about this book is that the story line deviates from the norm. It’s exactly what I needed! I LOVE it when a book shakes things (or more me) up.
I know some people have very strong opinions about dark reads (or taboo), but they are probably some of my favorite. This is the only type of book that I can’t ready so many like it in a row, only because I like a little sugar with my spice, but they are some of my fav. What I love about these types of books is that they challenge my personal views and moral compass, especially when they are told in first-person (my FAV!).
For instance, if a friend was in that type of situation and was to tell my about it, I may have some strong opinions for her. HOWEVER, by reading a story like this in first-person you get to walk in her shoes, experience her feels, read her inner-most thoughts, and get a better understanding of who she is, where she is coming from, and why she feels that way. I find myself loving her, understanding her, supporting her, and sharing the same feelings and thoughts. Then it causes me to re-think a lot about myself, test my moral compass, change some of my viewpoints, gain a little more understanding and compassion.
Some people don’t like to think outside the box. It scares the ever loving sh&%t out of them. Maybe it’s because they’re afraid of what they might find within themselves. You don’t have to agree with the subject matter to read the book, and by reading it, it doesn’t mean you agree with the dark parts either. Reading is fun, entertaining, and it’s best when it shakes things up! I find my most favorite books have me yelling, swearing, and even causing a few shorts moments of a catatonic state (shock factor).
Anyways… this book (Corrupt) was awesome! I won’t share too many opinions in case you are still reading it. One of the only complaints I had was that there wasn’t more. The story could’ve easily been drawn out to a book two, but then again, I don’t know if I could’ve handled a cliff hanger. That feeling is by far the worst in book world (next to being in a slump).
I can’t wait to read your review and your opinion of the story!
I LOVE your blog and read it daily! Keep it rockin!! 🙂

DARK ROMANCE
Corrupt (Devil’s Night Book 1)
DARK ROMANCE – HE WAS HER OBSESSION… (P.S. Here’s my own book review of this one)
“From New York Times bestselling author Penelope Douglas comes a new dark romance…
…I was told that dreams were our heart’s desires. My nightmares, however, became my obsession.
His name is Michael Crist. My boyfriend’s older brother is like that scary movie that you peek through your hand to watch. He’s handsome, strong, and completely terrifying. The star of his college’s basketball team and now gone pro, he’s more concerned with the dirt on his shoe than me.
But I noticed him. I saw him. I heard him. The things that he did, and the deeds that he hid…For years, I bit my nails, unable to look away. Now, I’ve graduated high school and moved on to college, but I haven’t stopped watching Michael. He’s bad, and the dirt I’ve seen isn’t content to stay in my head anymore.
Because he’s finally noticed me…”
