My go-to sweaters – Modern Mrs Darcy

It’s no secret that I love sweater season—so much so that it’s become somewhat of a tradition around here to round up a collection of current favorites every fall. Whether you’re shopping for your own closet or looking for gifts for others, I hope you enjoy this look at my favorite sweaters for the season.

This round-up isn’t exhaustive: I’m constantly sharing new and old favorites in Friday editions of Links I Love, and some of my “current” favorites are in fact many years old. Check out our archives for more ideas, and keep an eye on the blog for more to come!

Quince

How much do I love Quince sweaters? Let me count the ways, er, the variety I have in my closet. I’m a huge fan of their fisherman sweater: between the 100% Organic Cotton Fisherman Crew Sweater (XS-XL) and their cashmere version (XS-XL), I now own this Quince style in five colors and wear them multiple times per week. (I typically wear a small for Quince blouses but often opt for a medium for any sweater I might to want to layer, say, a button-down under.) This is a great dupe for the pricey Jenni Kayne style.

I don’t wear as many cardigans as I do crews, but there is always room in my heart and my closet for a fabulous cardi. Quince’s Mongolian Cashmere Oversized Boyfriend Cardigan Sweater (XS-XL) is a great go-to: once again, it isn’t completely identical to its much spendier Jenni Kayne counterpart, but it’s darn close and significantly cheaper.

I wear a ton of short-sleeve sweaters, on their own on warmer fall days (like today, as I type this) and layered under jackets and blazers. Once again two of my favorite options happen to come from Quince. I love this Lightweight Cotton Cashmere Link-Stitch Dolman Sweater (XS-XL): it’s elegant on its own, versatile as a layer, and lovely in every color. Their Mongolian Cashmere Tee (XS-XL) quickly became one of my most-worn garments this fall, especially the black. (Word to the wise: I personally found the ivory great for layering but a bit sheer to wear on its own.)

Jenni Kayne

Hear me out. Jenni Kayne is on the much pricier side but many sweater-lovers find a carefully chosen sweater from the brand to be worth it. Note that many of their styles are available in extended sizing.

I like to wait for a sale before buying. (Like now, the entire site is 25% off through December 2.) I have the Cashmere Fisherman Sweater (XS-3X) in classic ivory. For the cult favorite Cashmere Cocoon Cardigan (XXS-3X), the russet is especially gorgeous.

White + Warren

I fell in love with this women-led knitwear brand thanks to several local shops that stock a variety of beautiful W+W styles. While I own some pretty basic ivory and navy styles from the brand, when I think of White + Warren I first think of their gorgeous colors—I’ve bought many a sweater over the years because I fell in love with the particular shade. (For me, that often means a shade in the blue or coral family.)

I can’t get over this season’s gorgeous colors for the Cashmere Relaxed V Neck (XS-XL). I especially like the jade heather this season. I love spearmint for this Cashmere Turtleneck (XS-XL). And while not a sweater per se, it’s not for nothing that they’re well known for their Iconic Cashmere Travel Wrap.

Loft

I turn to Loft for stylish options at an extremely attractive price point. They stock adorable styles each and every season—but they often don’t last long. This season Leopard Print Luxe Knit Sweater (XXS-M; additional sizes sold out) is a great basic. At a lower price, it’s easier to have fun with something playful like this Dog Walk Sweater (XXS-XXL) that I won’t wear as often (but I’ll be grinning all day when I do). The Travel Wrap (One Size) is a well-made, versatile basic.

Target: Universal Thread

I love a good Target sweater. Every season they consistently have one to three styles that are exactly what I want, right now, for a fabulous price. This is the place where I’ll experiment with fun colors or a style that’s trendier than my usual; they also often offer extended sizing. Right now the Women’s Crewneck Cable Knit Pullover Sweater, Women’s Button-Up Cardigan, and Women’s Cozy Knit Crewneck Pullover Sweater from Universal Thread check all my boxes. They come in a range of colors (XS-4X, though some colors are selling out quickly.)

J. Crew Factory

Like Target and Loft, J. Crew Factory offers stylish staples at a great price. This season I’m loving all their lady jacket options, like the Cotton lady jacket cardigan sweater (XXS-3X). I have the Cotton-wool blend Teddie sweater (XXS-3X) in several great colors. And the Schoolboy sweater blazer (XXS-3X) a classic for a reason: it offers a polished look with cardigan comfort .

Universal Standard

This is the one sweater brand here that I haven’t tried, but want to because of Universal Standard’s scads of raving fans who are evangelical about their love for the brand. Their offerings are pretty and stylish; I’ve heard raves for years about how well-made they are. For many Universal Standard equals extended sizing: if you’re not familiar with this company, they size differently (4XS-4XL) so be sure to look at their size guide to figure out your Universal Standard size equivalent.

I love the jewel tone options of the Better-Than-Cashmere Dolman Sweater. The Eco Relaxed Core Sweater looks soft and cozy. The Better-Than-Wool Cardigan is available in an array of colors and even stripes.

J. Crew

I don’t shop at J.Crew often, but golly I love the J.Crew sweaters in my closet. Two favorites from J.Crew: Relaxed cable-knit cardigan sweater (XS/S-L/XL) and Heritage cotton Rollneck™ sweater in stripe (XXXS-3X).

Boden

Boden is my go-to for unique styles with a high fun factor. If you love quirky sweaters, take a look at Boden! They’re also fabulous for color and pattern. This Heather Jacquard Cat Sweater (XS-XL) is perfect for cat-lovers; there’s also a dog version. The Edie Fair Isle Pink Birds Jumper (XS-XL) is adorable!
