Shaunygirl has a pretty great question, and I was all to happy to answer. My tastes have changed somewhat from my early book-a-day addiction, but in the grand scheme of things, if a book hooks me hard, I am ALL in for as long as it takes.
She asks:
I was just curious about everybody’s page count sweet spot.
Lately books have seemed longer to me. I always like between 250-300. It’s long enough to feel connected to the characters but not to long for my adhd brain.
Hi Shauny!
Hrmmm… back in the day (when I was reading a book a day – and all I did was read and devour every book I came across) the longer, the better. I hated leaving a world I was fully immersed in and got attached to. I hated leaving the characters. I’d actually mourn them. Miss them, think about them, and I would be DELIGHTED if there were more books out or coming out so that I could jump back in with them again. They felt like friends. Family.
Now, I don’t always have as much time to read, or maybe it’s more of an attention span thing… with work, and blogging, and home life, I like to get the full story in a 300 to 350 page book. Maybe even 250 would provide enough detail for me to connect, but anything shorter than that… I feel lacks detail and connection.
That said, I’ve read a few short stories in the past that have absolutely hooked me and even devastated me and no time flat! And then… hooked me into the series so I could find out more. Perfect example?
Now THOSE are my favorite kind of reads (whether they’re short or long) – hook me hard and connect me and I will devour it and shout it from the rooftops.
Great question!!! 🙂
How about you guys?
