I’m looking for a book with a female mc that I think is a detective/investigator.  She’s hiding her level of magic and has a rocky relationship with mmc.  He’s a leader that doesn’t know her power level.

He sees her at a function from the back, comments on her drink or is surprised by it, then surprised to find it is her.  Somehow she accidentally creates something and throws it at him.  It might be made from her blood.

She also has a rocky relationship with her mom
